Neanderthal burger anyone?
Submitted by cscutcher on Tue, 2008-11-25 13:35Why are we OK eating meat? Why are we ok with animal testing? Why do we draw the line between humanity and animals?
Putting aside religious arguments which are a different argument all together I see a few reasons we justify to ourselves the mistreatment of Animals;
Animals aren't smart enough to protect
The problem with this argument is it's just too hard to define "smart". There is solid evidence of animals showing emotional intelligence, a self of sense, cooperation, imagination, even limited language ability with cultural abilty. No one would argue that your average animal is a smart as a average person, but if thats our criteria why do we so care about the mentally handicapped?
Animals aren't genetically human

PETA makes attempt to make people wake up from the cartoon meat fantasy

We claim to be animal lovers but still stuff our faces with the dead flesh of our so called friends. I think a big reason for this inconsistency is how alienated we are from the process of producing and preparing meat.
Would most people be able to eat meat if they had to kill the animal themselves, bleed it and gut it? Maybe if it was life and death, but it just isnt anymore is it?
PETA seem to also be aware of this separation and are picking on the DS game "Cooking Mama" which PETA claims is too "meat focussed". I also note that the game further enforces the illusion that the preparation of meat is cutesy and clean.
To combat this they've made a satirical pop at the Cooking Mama games by making their own gore filled version. However I'm sorry to say I don't think its going to have the desired affect, as the register says;
Register Hardware?s sceptical that the game will have much effect - not least because it's actually a lot of fun to play. Admittedly it?s quite gory and difficult to rip the bird?s feathers out, but we?ve seen worse PG-rated films.
Read the full register article here, and play the game here.
